It was with sadness and shame that I read the articles related to the Yunel Escobar’s homophobic boutade (outburst). First, because as a Cuban-Canadian too, the image of the Cuban culture and its society’s behaviour in my second homeland is important to me. Second, because nobody pointed out until now, that Mr. Escobar’s “sentence” in Spanish was rife with orthographic errors, the worst: the wrong conjugation of the verb “ser” at the second person, should be spelled “eres” and not “ere.”
Third and final, when some people of Cuban origin say that the use of maricón (faggot) is common. It may be “common” in their house and in their social circle, but in Cuban society in general, this word is a serious insult to homosexuals and heterosexuals as well, and no one would dare shout it in public. Cubans are not all the same. Don’t let Mr. Escobar’s irresponsible statement instill an incorrect impression of all Cubans.
